HOWTO: Avoid getting Zetadocs exceptions in the event log when the Zetadocs Client is not installed

ZTN1892

ID: ZTN1892

This Zetafax technical note applies to:

  • Zetafax Version 2010 or later with Outlook Add-ins

Symptom

When opening Outlook with the Zetafax Outlook Add-ins installed, errors appear in the event log saying that there was an exception from the Zetadocs Client application even if the Zetadocs Client is not installed.

Cause

The Outlook Add-ins installed with the Zetafax installation share some key modules with Zetadocs. The Outlook add-in is trying to retrieve some non-existent Zetadocs information from Active Directory causing the Exception to be thrown.

Resolution

In order to resolve this issue the Zetadocs Outlook add-in needs to be uninstalled or removed. We have provided three options which achieve this below, please review each and then implement the one most suitable to your requirements.

Option 1 - Uninstall the Zetadocs add-in:

Uninstalling the Zetadocs add-in, means that you will also uninstall the Zetafax add-in. Thus, apply this solution only if you are not using the Zetafax Outlook add-ins on the specific machine that has the Event log exceptions. These are the steps for the above solution:

  • Go to Control Panel.
  • Click on ‘Add remove programs’ or ‘Uninstall a program’ depending on the Windows version.
  • Right click on ‘Zetafax Client Application’ and select ‘Change.
  • The ‘Zetafax Client Installation Wizard’ will popup.
  • Select ‘Modify’ and click the ‘Next’ button.
  • Click on ‘Outlook Integration’ and select the ‘This feature will not be available’ option.
  • Click on the ‘Next’ button.
  • Click on the ‘Install’ button.

Option 2 - Remove the Zetadocs add-in:

Removing the Zetadocs add-in will not affect the Zetafax add-in but if the installation is repaired or Zetafax is upgraded then the Zetadocs add-in will be installed on Outlook again. These are the steps for removing the Zetadocs add-in:

Outlook 2007

  • Open Outlook and click on the ‘Tools’ menu and select ‘Trust Center’.
  • Click on the ‘Add-ins’ button.
  • Select ‘Manage COM add-ins’ at the end of the popup window and click on ‘Go…’ button.
  • Uncheck the ‘Zetadocs Addin for Microsoft Outlook’ and then click on the ‘Remove’ button.

Outlook 2010

  • Open Outlook and click on the ‘File’ tab and choose ‘Options’.

Option 3 - Set the add-in load behaviour in the registry

If the above options do not work it is possible to set a registry key to ensure that Outlook will not load the Zetadocs add-in on startup. To set this registry key, please follow the steps below:
