ZTN1466

ID: ZTN1466

This Zetafax technical note applies to:

  • Zetafax version 9.1 and above

Summary

This technote is designed to help you set up Eicon Diva Server SoftIP (both H323 and Sip environments) so that you can use it as a Zetafax device for sending faxes over an IP connection.

More information

Eicon SoftIP - H.323

1.            Ensure that you have installed Diva Server SoftIP, that the USB hardware dongle has been inserted and an appropriate eicon licence file has been added.

2.            Configure Diva Server SoftIP for your Fax over IP networking (FoIP) configuration. Detailed information on this configuration is beyond the scope of this document but consider the following points:

a.            The default configuration of Diva Server SoftIP is to use a H.323 Gatekeeper and this is the recommended configuration. SoftIP will automatically search for a Gatekeeper or can be configured to use a specific Gatekeeper.

Simply speaking a Gatekeeper's job is to provide routing information for the FoIP connections and resolve telephone numbers to IP address. The advantage of this configuration is that Zetafax can use telephone numbers as usual and the fax routing will be handled automatically by the Gatekeeper.

Gatekeepers can be incorporated in IP PBXs or routers or be a standalone service such as GNU Gatekeeper (http://www.gnugk.org/)

b.            Selecting the 'Own telephone numbers' tab will allow you to add one or more telephone numbers to a list. This list of numbers will be registered with the Gatekeeper on startup and tell the Gatekeeper which telephone numbers should be assigned to SoftIP. Any FoIP call managed by the Gatekeeper which has a destination telephone number matching one of these numbers will be delivered to SoftIP and hence Zetafax.

The following example shows SoftIP configured to register telephone numbers 6200-6210 with the Gatekeeper.

c.              Note If you wish to change the configuration to connect to a Gateway or to use IP Direct then click on the appropriate icon in the tree and then click on the warning bar at the top of the page to enable the new configuration:

Further information is available in the SoftIP configuration help files.

3.            Select View/Expert and then select CAPI 2.0 Options. Tick 'Avoid concurrent broadcasts to one application' as shown:

4.            Select File> Save to save and activate your configuration.

5.            Exit the Diva Server SoftIP Configuration program.

6.            Now add the Diva Server SoftIP CAPI devices to Zetafax using the Zetafax Configuration Program.

·      Right-click 'Devices' and select 'Add' from the menu

·      This launches the Device Configuration Wizard

·      Click 'Next' to display the available device type list.

·      Select the 'Active ISDN controller'

Now add the required number of devices - each device is one 'fax modem' and takes one SoftIP FoIP licence

Note that SoftIP should be configured as one controller with as many devices as you have licences.  In the example below 9 SoftIP devices have been configured - all on the same controller, controller 1:

7.            After adding each device, proceed to configure it as required e.g. dial prefix, incoming user, etc.

8.            Close the Zetafax Configuration Program.

9.            Restart Zetafax server in order for the changes to take effect.

Eicon SoftIP - SIP

1.            Follow the onscreen instructions to install the Eicon Soft IP software.

2.            Ensure that you have successfully added the license to the management console. (You receive your license after you have registered your Proof of Purchase Code (PPC) and submitted your DUID on the Eicon website)

3.            Edit the Diva Server configuration manager to match your setup. Ensure that the group optimization under the CAPI services is set to yes.
Also ensure that you have changed the number of channels to match your license.

4.            You need to configure various settings including:

a.            The Own Port Number this is 5060 by default

b.            The Own IP Address/DNS name. This is the IP/DNS name of the Zetafax Server i.e. 192.168.0.1

c.            The Registrar IP Address or DNS. This is the IP/DNS of the Registrar (usually integrated with the PBX) i.e. 192.168.0.254

d.            The Registrar Port number. This is the port number the registrar and Diva Server will communicate on.

If you do not have a Registrar on your network you can use the Soft IP Phone Number Mapping option available from the tools menu. You can populate phone/fax numbers that are internally accessible to the network

5.            Configure Diva Server SoftIP for your Fax over IP networking (FoIP) configuration. Detailed information on this configuration is beyond the scope of this document but consider the following points:

e.            The default configuration of Diva Server SoftIP is to use a SIP Registrar and this is the recommended configuration. You enter the IP address of this in the Soft IP Phone Mapping options.

Simply speaking a Registrars job is to provide routing information for the FoIP connections and resolve telephone numbers to IP address. The advantage of this configuration is that Zetafax can use telephone numbers as usual and the fax routing will be handled automatically by the registrar.

Registrar's can be incorporated in IP PBXs or routers or be a standalone service.

f.                Selecting the Soft IP Phone Number Mapping option will allow you to add one or more telephone numbers to a list. This list of numbers will be registered with the Registrar on start-up and tell it which telephone numbers should be assigned to SoftIP. Any FoIP call managed by the Registrar which has a destination telephone number matching one of these numbers will be delivered to SoftIP and hence Zetafax.

The following example shows SoftIP configured to register telephone numbers 6200-6210 with the registrar.

Further information is available in the SoftIP configuration help files.

6.            Select File> Save to save and activate your configuration.

7.            Exit the Diva Server SoftIP Configuration program.

9.            After adding each device, proceed to configure it as required e.g. dial prefix, incoming user, etc.

10.    Close the Zetafax Configuration Program.

Restart Zetafax server in order for the changes to take effect.
