HOWTO: Optimise Rendering add-on settings for file conversion

ZTN1419

ID: ZTN1419

This Zetafax technical note applies to:

  • Zetafax Version 9 Service Pack 1 (9.0.300) and later

Summary

If users have purchased the rendering add-on, the Zetafax Server is able to convert a range of file formats into a tiff-type format suitable for faxing. For colour documents this requires a stage where colour elements of the document are converted to greyscale via a dithering algorithm.

From Service Pack 1 of Zetafax 9 onwards an improved dithering algorithm has been implemented which should significantly improve the image quality for a number of documents. In addition it is possible to manually alter the algorithm used, either to improve the image equality further, or to improve Zetafax Server throughput if quality is less of a concern.

More information

To alter the dithering algorithm used by the Zetafax Server perform the steps described below: -

  1. On the Zetafax Server machine, open the file zfax\SYSTEM\Z-DB\SETUP.INI, where 'zfax' is the name of the directory where Zetafax is installed.
  2. In the [DOCTIFF] section, add the following line:

IGFunc: < format>

Where < format> is one of the following options:

halftone
bayer
diffusion

  1. Save SETUP.INI and then restart the Zetafax Server.

In general halftone gives the quickest processing but with the lowest image quality, while diffusion gives the highest image quality at a significant performance cost. Testing indicates that the bayer setting gives a reasonable image quality with only a modest decrease in performance compared to the halftone setting.
