INFO: WSS vs. MOSS
ZTN4051
ID: ZTN4051
This Zetadocs technical note applies to:
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS)
- Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS)
- Zetadocs for Dynamics GP v2.0
- Zetadocs for Dynamics NAV v2.1
Summary
Zetadocs uses Microsoft SharePoint technology to archive copies of documents that are delivered and also to store captured documents. There is a choice of which Microsoft SharePoint technology to use with Zetadocs.
This technical note gives you information that will help you to make the decision as to which to choose.
Option 1: Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS)
This option provides standard Zetadocs archive and search functionality that will be suitable for most small scale Zetadocs installations.
Option 2: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS)
This option provides enhanced Zetadocs archive and search functionality that will be suitable for larger Zetadocs installations or those that have specific requirements. MOSS provides all the functionality that is available with WSS but has the following enhanced options:
Zetadocs Search
With MOSS there is an enhanced Zetadocs Search page which allows searching on specific items of data associated with documents that are stored e.g. you could search explicitly on the NAV or GP record number. The search results display contains extra information such as the organization name and recipient name. Additionally, MOSS allows you to customise the Zetadocs search page, so for example you could add additional columns you may wish to search upon.
Enhanced Security Searches
With MOSS the search results are security trimmed so users only see what they can access. This is useful if you want to restrict access to the Zetadocs archive to only certain users within your organisation.
Search Indexing
With MOSS there is continuous index propagation to keep information fresh.
Retention policies
MOSS allows you to define customized information management policies to control the retention period, expiration actions, and document-auditing settings.
Upgrading from WSS to MOSS
Should your requirements change at a later stage, there are various upgrade paths from WSS to MOSS detailed here.
