PRB: 'Could not load nnotes.dll'. Error when trying to configure Lotus notes with Zetafax.

This Zetafax technical note applies to:

  • All Notes versions supported by Zetafax.

Symptom

When trying to configure the Zetafax Email gateway with Lotus Domino/Notes, one more of the following error messages may be reported.

Cause

This is error will occur if the Lotus Notes installation did not register the path to the nnotes.dll in the environment variable of the operating system on the Zetafax server system.

Resolution

WARNING: Editing system environment variables incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Equisys cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the accidental editing or removal of other environment variables and the effect on the operating system.

  1. On the Zetafax server system (the one reporting the error messages) work through the following steps.
  2. Using the search feature in windows locate the nnotes.dll file, and make a note of its location. e.g. 'C:\Lotus\Domino' (note on your system this may be different).
  3. Right-click the 'My Computer' icon on the desktop and select 'Properties'.
  4. Click on the 'Advanced' tab, then 'Environment Variables.' you will have the following dialog box;

  1. In the 'System variables' scroll down to the variable path then click 'Edit'.

  1. In the 'Variable Value' add the following string to the end of the path:

;< path to nnotes.dll>

Note: you must add the semicolon to separate the previous entry from the one you have just added. Also DO NOT delete any of the previous entries.

  1. The system will need to be rebooted in order for the changes to take effect.

Status

This has been identified by Equisys as a problem with the software versions given above.
