PRB: Fax Relay is not possible using Audiocodes fax gateway devices

Print

ZTN1850

ID: ZTN1850

This Zetafax technical note applies to:

  • Zetafax 2011 with FoIP Standard Edition

Symptom

It is not possible to send fax relay messages when connecting a fax machine to an Audiocodes gateway.

Cause

The issue is caused by a compatibility problem between Audiocodes and the Zetafax FoIP Standard Edition connector. This combination of device and software driver will cause the special relay character, the *, to be ignored when passing to the Zetafax Server.

Resolution

A workaround is available by following these steps:

  1. Set up fax relay as per the instructions.
  2. Open the SETUP.INI file in < ZFAX> \System\Z-DB on the Zetafax Server machine.
  3. Locate the [RELAY] section.
  4. Locate the line RelayIdentifier in the [RELAY] section and specify a number combination that will not be used in any dialled numbers (e.g. 1234 may be an unused number combination for outside lines and DID numbers, so this can be used in place of the * in the dial string to identify the dialled number as a fax relay). NOTE: If the RelayIdentifier line is not present, insert the line at the end of the [RELAY] section.
  5. Once the relay identifier has been set, the fax machine can be used to dial out using the new value in place of the * (e.g. 12349909123402072034000 where 1234 is the relay identifier, 9909 is the DID of the user sending, and 02072034000 is the outbound number that Zetafax Server will dial).

Status

This has been identified by Equisys as a problem with the software versions given above.
