PRB: Primary and Backup servers close down soon after starting on a Zetafax failover system

This Zetafax technical note applies to:
- Zetafax 2011 and later
- Windows Server 2008 / 2008 R2
Symptom
In a Zetafax failover configuration, the Primary and Backup servers close down unexpectedly soon after starting.
Cause
In order for a Zetafax failover system to function, it uses a heartbeat between the primary and backup by checking the ‘Last Access Time’ property on a system file stored on the Zetafax ‘Shared Data’ folder. On Windows Server 2008, Microsoft has disabled this property by default.
Resolution
On the Windows server machine where Zetafax ‘Shared Data’ folder is stored, set the following registry setting:

- Log onto the machine using an account that has local machine administrative privileges.
- From the start menu, click Run.
- Type the following: regedit
- Click OK.
- In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate
- Give it a value of 0.
- Restart the machine to apply the changes.
Status
This has been identified by Equisys as a problem with the software versions given above.
