HOWTO: Upgrade Brooktrout TR1034 Installations from Zetafax version 8 or 9 Pre SP1

This Zetafax technical note applies to:

  • Brooktrout TR1034 PRI T1/E1 Intelligent fax cards
  • Zetafax version 8 to 9.0.208

Summary

This technical note applies to Zetafax Customers who installed and configured a Brooktrout TR1034 PRI T1/E1 Intelligent fax card with version 9.0.208 or earlier have configured the card using a previous version of the Brooktrout API/SDK (Version 2.1.1) and need to update the installation if they are planning to install additional Brooktrout hardware.

Also Customers who are experiencing problems with a Brooktrout TR1034 installation may be instructed to work though this technical note to troubleshoot/resolve any problems.

With version Zetafax v9.1, Equisys have updated Zetafax to work with a later version of the Brooktrout API/SDK. This technical note provides a step by step process of uninstalling the previous Brooktrout components and updating it to the version shipped with Zetafax v9.1.

Note: If you have already upgraded to Zetafax v9.1 or later there will be no change in functionality in the configuration program or the sever program until you work through the steps in this technote.

More information

The process is broken down into the following sections:

  • Removing the BSMI service, and Boston device driver.
  • Uninstalling the Brooktrout ECC and Boston software.
  • Installing the new Windows device driver and Brooktrout software.
  • Configuring the Brooktrout card using the Brooktrout configuration tool.
  • Removing the old devices listed in Zetafax and replacing them with new ones.

Log onto the Zetafax server system as a local administrator. Shut down the Zetafax server service or application. Then work through the following steps:

Removing the BSMI service, and Boston device driver

  1. Open a command prompt. (Start|Run, 'cmd' then click 'OK')
  2. Change the path to C:\Boston\ecc.api\server\bsmisrv (Note: the path may differ on your system).
  3. Type 'bsmisrv -remove' then 'Enter', this should stop and remove the BSMI service. As below.

  1. Change the path to C:\Boston\Driver\winnt\install\.
  2. Type 'Install -r' then 'Enter', this should remove the Boston device drive. As below.

Uninstalling the Brooktrout ECC and Boston software

  1. Open the 'Add/Remove Programs' control panel applet.
  2. Highlight Brooktrout ECC v1.7.7, and click Change/Remove. See below.

  1. You will be prompted to confirm that you wish to uninstall the Brooktrout ECC v1.7.7, click Yes to continue.
  2. At the end of the uninstall process it may report that it was unable to delete the 'C:\Boston' folder. Click 'OK' to continue.
  3. Next, Highlight BOSTON v2.1, and click Change/Remove. See below

  1. You will be prompted to confirm that you wish to uninstall the 'BOSTON v2.1', click Yes to continue.
  2. At the end of the uninstall process it may report that it was unable to delete the 'C:\Boston' folder. Click 'OK' to continue.
  3. Delete the 'C:\Boston' folder.

Installing the new Windows device driver and Brooktrout software

  1. Start the Windows Device Manager, (Right click My Computer, select Properties, Hardware, click Device Manager.)
  2. Double-click 'Network Controller' under the 'Other devices' category, see below.

  1. Click the Driver tab, and then Update Driver.
  2. The 'Upgrade Device Driver Wizard' will start up, click 'Next > ' to continue.
  3. Check 'Search for a suitable driver for my device', then click 'Next > '.
  4. Check, 'Specify a location' and uncheck the other options. Then click 'Next > '.

  1. You will now be prompted to provide the location of the device drivers; these will be located in the following locations:
    • On the Zetafax product CD, \Zetafax\Server\program files\Zetafax Server\SERVER\Boston
    • If you have already installed the SP1 update, C:\program files\Zetafax Server\SERVER\Boston.
  2. After you have provided the appropriate path, Click 'OK', then 'Next > ' to confirm that you wish to install the driver.
  3. After Windows has installed the driver, it will prompt you to install the software. Click 'Yes' to continue.

Note: If you are prompted to provide the location of the installation for the Brooktrout software, you will find the Boston.msi file in the ..\Boston\Trxstream folder.

  1. The Brooktrout System Software installation will start up, click 'Next > ' to continue.
  2. Check the licence agreement, click 'Next > ' then 'Next > ', and 'Install' to install.
  3. Once the installation has finished, click 'Finish', then 'Next > '. Windows Device Driver Wizard will report that the driver has installed. Click 'Finish'.

Configuring the Brooktrout card using the Brooktrout configuration tool

  1. Run the Brooktrout Configuration Tool, Start|Programs|Brooktrout|Configuration Tool (Runtime).
  2. Step through the Brooktrout wizard to install and configure the Brooktrout software and driver.

Note: If you receive any of the following error messages, you will need to run the configuration tool in off-line mode. For more information please refer to ZTN1397-HOWTO Configure older Brooktrout TR1034 PRI boards.

Removing the old devices listed in Zetafax and replacing them with new ones

  1. Start the Zetafax configuration program, (Start|Programs|Zetafax Configuration).
  2. In the device listing, Right-click a BTxSTR-X channel and select 'Delete', click yes to confirm that you wish to do so.

  1. Repeat this procedure with all configured channels.
  2. After all the devices have been removed, Click 'Action', select 'Add' then 'Manually install other devices?', and click 'Next > '.
  3. Select Brooktrout fax board, then Click 'Add.'
  4. Select the type of board you have installed and then click 'Next > '

Note: Configuration for these types of board is on a per board basis, not on a per port basis as in previous versions of Zetafax, or other fax devices.

  1. Enter a description for the Board you are configuring.
  2. If this is the only board you have installed, the configuration program, will have automatically selected the Board module no, if you have multiple cards installed, you will need to make sure the correct module number has been selected for the card you are configuring.
  3. In the Channels used setting you need to specify the number of lines on the board you wish to utilize on the board up to the total number available on the board (these may not be the same value if you have a partial PRI line or a limited line licence).
  4. Next you need to select the default User to receive incoming faxes if you wish to receive faxes on this board. You can also choose to set a certain number of Receive-only channels or check the Use all channels for incoming calls only if you won't be sending faxes. If you wish to make all channels outgoing only, set the default user to receive faxes to (disabled).

Note: If you are using DID/DDI routing, you will still need to select a default user for incoming faxes. This will be the user who receives faxes if no DID/DDI information is received.

  1. When you have completed specifying the settings, click Advanced. to specify a dial prefix (e.g. 9 to get an outside line), the fax number on the header line etc. click OK, when you have finished.

Note: You may need to run the Driver configuration tool. in advanced mode if, for example, you have a digital card and need to check that the line type is set to either ISDN or T1 Robbed-bit as appropriate.

  1. Click Next, then Next again to continue, and Finish to complete.
