How to be prepared for Microsoft disabling Basic authentication with Client Submission (SMTP AUTH)

Graeme Farquhar

Microsoft has announced that Exchange Online will permanently remove support for Basic authentication with Client Submission (SMTP AUTH) in September 2025. This blog post explains how this could affect you as a Zetadocs customer and the steps you should take to avoid disruption.

What does this mean?

Microsoft’s announcement means that Zetadocs Delivery systems will no longer be able to use Basic authentication with Exchange Online when sending emails, as of September 2025.

Who is affected?

Only Zetadocs Delivery customers that currently send email using SMTP pointing to Exchange Online (smtp.office365.com).

What steps should I take?

There are several options available, and these depend on your installation method of Zetadocs Delivery.

This technote explains the options available to you.

When should I take action?

Given that Microsoft has made it very clear that September 2025 is the disable date and that there will be no exceptions, it is essential that Zetadocs Delivery customers make the configuration changes required before this date, to avoid disrupting the sending of documents.
